The potato, *Solanum tuberosum*, originated in the **Andes Mountains of South America**, specifically the region of modern-day Peru and Bolivia.
While the ‘Red Pontiac’ is a specific cultivar developed later, the species as a whole traces back to this South American origin. The ‘Red Pontiac’ variety was developed in the United States in the 1930s, but it’s *still* a *Solanum tuberosum* and therefore descended from the Andean potatoes.
